talon worth it

my friend has a 91 talon(turbo) sitting in his yard. the car is an automatic transmission and needs a new one. hell give it to me for $700 if i want it, and since it needs a new transmission ill just switch it over to manual which i estimate will cost $1000. is this estimate right? and if it is, is it worth it to buy this car for $1700? i know it needs new drive axles too, and something else, but both of these repairs i will do myself.

Re: talon worth it

How much the swap to 5 speed will cost depends alot on how cheap or expensive you find the parts. I know your need the basics.. a tranny, full clutch system, all the shif linkage. If its AWD I think the trannys are special or something. Not sure on the fine details of a swap like this.

Figure out how much it is gonna cost you to get it fixed and it running condition before you buy it. Have to parts found for the final price. Theres nothing worse than guesstimating what you think it might be then not having the money to do it and have to stare at it! You dont want a DSM paperweight do ya? lol

How the rest of the car condition wise? Mileage on the motor? Pull off the upper I/C pipe and see if theres any bad play/messed up fins on the turbo. You know give it the full once over.

I think if its otherwise in good shape and you can find the parts for the 5 speed swap cheap enough it would be a decent deal. Good Luck! Peace

Generally people would say that it is not worth it to do that swap. You can always find dsms that are that cheap with broken parts. Find one with a 5 speed in it.

My homeboy and I just converted his automatic to a manual. I can easily get a hold of a 5 speed tranny for 300 and a stage 2 clutch kit for 150. Weld in a new clutch pedal and take care of a few odds and ends and it's all going to come out to about 600. Like helliviknow said, this also depends on how cheap YOU can find the parts as well and if you're doing it yourself or paying someone else. 91 TSI for 700? If the body is in good shape then I say go for it, the swap is worth it.
