high idle after starting

I also asked this question in my "check engine codes" thread but figured that most people stopped reading that one by now, so here goes... recently, on occasion my car will idle high for about 30 seconds after I start it. It used to do that sometimes, but it would be idling at around 1300 RPM for about 2-3 seconds then quickly drop down to normal, so I figured that was alright, and it just needed to figure out what was going on. But the last few times it has done it, it idled at about 1300 RPM for maybe 10 seconds, then drop to about 1100, and stay there for about 10 seconds, and then slowly drop to about 900 and sit there for a while, but by then I was too impatient, or too late to work to watch it so I didnt let it drop to normal. If it makes a difference, My car has never been in sub 50 degree weather until now... probably never even below 60 degrees. Oh yeah, it was in park the whole time, until I put it in reverse and left, I didnt try putting it in drive to see if it helped, but I think that it would, and thats why I left it in park..(so I could see just how long it would take). n e ways.. thats it... thanks, Rick

Re: high idle after starting

My 3 93 tbirds and my old '95 f150 do/did that. The birds have a high idle for about 20 seconds and step down in rpms similar to what you describe and the f150 would take 45 seconds or so. But this is only when the car is cold, not after reaching operating temps. As far as what cause it to go goofy, couldn't tell you.

Re: high idle after starting

Hey Rick, i got a 95 4.6 tbird, and it does exactly the same thing. I start it, it idles at around 1200-1300, then it takes like a good 40 seconds to go down to normal-which is 700-850rpm i believe.

This happens in either temp also.

Re: high idle after starting

hmm, hasnt happened to me in warm weather yet, not for that long anyways... in park I idle at approx. 8-900, in D i idle at about 7-800. If I put it in drive though it automatically drops to normal idle, but I dont like doing that.
