Question gas gauge way past full mark

I replaced my fuel pump on my 96 chevy Tahoe, but when I turned the switch the gas gauge went past the full mark as if it was broken. Is there a possibility the electric connection on top of the tank came a loose? Or will I have to take the tank down again and look at the new fuel pump I replaced. Before the Tahoe would not start and now I still does not start, but the gas gauge is way past the full mark. Any help would be appreciated.

Most likely the connector at the top of the tank was left loose.
