How do u advance the timing?

I wanted to know how to advance the timing on my 90 accord ex without using aftermarket cam gears. I thought there was a way using the distributor but im not really sure how to do it? IF possible can someone explain to me on how to do it? I already got a timing light and everything but since i just got my car a lil while ago im not sure exactly where my TDC mark is on my timing belt and where it is suppose to line up. Thanx ppl

You realize that by doing that it will cause damage to your engine. The only time you need to advance or retartd is when the timing is off or if you are installing proformance parts that require a diifferent timing setting. Your car had specific timing settings for a reason. It runs its best at factory settings.

Now if you had a cam installed or hotter ignition put in it would be different. If your looking for faster throttle responce get a mod chip.

I don't think you can damage the engine by advancing the timing... you'll change the power curve and may either give up low end torque and increase high end hp and have a rougher idle. All you're effectively doing is changing the timing of the spark. As far as gains you may gain a little... I haven't adjusted my timing but believe you do it by rotating the ignition distributor assembly where it is attached to the side of the motor, just below the valve cover on the left hand side of your engine. If you move it too much you probably won't be able to start your car.... so I'd make a mark on your engine where you started at and move it say in 0.5cm increments. Caviat...BEFORE you do anything check with your Chilton or Haynes manual or else you may do more damage than good.

If you're messing with the cam gears that's a whole different story and you can do major damage if it's out of spec. Adjustable cam gears are the best way to adjust the mechanical timing.

Yea i already kinda learned how to time it by ear and so forth. I guess it isnt worth it then huh since i only have basic bolt ons so my gains would be bare minimum.

Advance or retard your ignition timing by turning your distibutor, cam timing with aftermarket cam gears. Cam gears have a greater impact if you have DOHC
