?

I love Vettes but something that has always puzzled me and maybe you guys can answer this for me.

Why don't any Vettes I see have Rear Spoilers on them?

I would think that in a car with that much speed capability that it would be a natural thing to provide that extra downforce.

Now I'm aware that a rear spoiler doesn't do all that much until you're above astronomical speeds but not only will it provide that added downforce but I think certain spoilers would make the Vette look even more menacing.

Can you guys help me out?

And please forgive me if this has already been asked here before.

Form over function I suppose.

Most of the C5 and C4 community that I've talked to
in my years have a serious dis-taste for wings/spoilers.

There is no disputing that the 'right' wing can be an asset
to a car(even the hideous ones on the import rides ).
The point is how often are you at those speeds and more
importantly for how long...? i.e. 'sustained speed'.

For the average 'Joe'. Not much value. Better to speed that
money on other mods. For guys that frequently take the
car on real race tracks, then I could see, and HAVE seen
some guys run wings, I just wouldn't want it on a daily
driver Corvette. Weekend race-prepped car only, sure.

I've participated in a few 'track day' event's at Sebring and
Road Atlanta, and was lucky enough to drive a C5 with
the Greenwood C5 wing, and trust me when you hit about
80mph the car just plants itself to the ground. You can
definitely feel the push in the rear.

I've seen you around, Purerock. I have come to respect your judgements.
cool signature

I've seen these aftermarket body kits that have the ground effects and spoilers. That is the easiest way to ruin the looks of a Corvette, they look hideous. The dynamics and design of the Vette create such good "mechanical" grip that wings or spoilers aren't needed for average driving. As for the Greenwood wing, it not only looks good, it works well. How much r.& d. do you think went into its design?

One thing about Corvette, they don't use gimmicks to help sell their cars, they sell themselves.

Have to agree with purerock on the love hate relationship...there are very few companies that make a decent looking spoiler for these cars.

Purerock....love the Dragon!!! Did it on my way home from BG after picking up my car.

I saw one "fair" looking spoiler in the MidAmerica Designs magazine for Vettes.. But yeah, unless someone does a lot of work to the rest of the body a spoiler just looks outlandish on a vette.. especially those damned 6inch high aluminum wings with the shark fins on the sides. And as far as the high speed thing. The vette has such a wedge shape that it provides a lot of downforce already. And the steering pump is variable so that when you take your car faster the handling is maintained.
