Phantom Formula 1
In another thread, I suggested jokingly that a phantom Formula 1 car would be a cool project, but then I thought about it, and Octagon seemed to like the idea.... so I thought about it some more.
I'm new, and don't know if a project like this has ever been done, or if there is enough community here to actually do it. But anyway, what I'm thinkin' is that some interested modellers here can build some phantom race cars, for the "2004" season, and we could make it like a Model Car forums group project. And, if we got really crazy, (and brave) we could send the cars to the same place and take a picture of all the cars lined up on a grid or something. The idea would be to make cars in paint schemes we liked from the past, or from automakers that are no longer entirely (or at all) involved in F1. My car would be a white Honda with rising sun on it, like Ginther's car in 64. Octagon would probably want to do an orange McLaren.... Then there are of course plenty of other cars that would be sweet, like a green and yellow or John Player Special Lotus (breaking out of the manufacturer livery there, but it sure was pretty.) Throw in a Ferarri, Maserati, sleek and sexxy silver Mercedes... This would take some skill, some kitbashing, scratchbuilding, and some pretty heavy duty decal work. But I think it would be some fun sort of alternative history, racing speculation, whatever you want to call it. A good chance to take some creative license, too, but still after plenty of research and thought. A fun, mindbending, challenge of a project. Any takers? Or am I just crazy here?

I'm up for it as soon as I track down an appropriate McLaren kit. Though I'd also like to build a McLaren as if the team were still carrying the Marlboro colors and it were still being driven by Aryton Senna.
As far as other phantom F1 cars, well, I've been considering taking Revell of Germany's Toyota kit and painting it white and black with black wheels. Then adding the door decals from the Fujimi Initial D Trueno, just to have a spot of fun. Or how about a BMW-Williams in the classic Canon colors that Nigel Mansell drove under? Lot's of possibilities.

Sounds like a cool idea. I remember seeing somewhere a F2001 Ferrari painted up in a proper McLaren style Marlboro scheme.
Good luck getting it together. I'm afraid I have too many real F1 cars that I haven't found the time to build. Adding phantom ones to the list would be getting ridiculous! |

Re: Re: Phantom Formula 1
A couple of years back in SAE, they featured a model of futuristic F1 car which was completely scratchbuilt. It was also set in a diorama of a pit lane team garage, it was quite stunning. Perhaps you can go along these lines and make something fot the 2024 season and not 2004.
Personally i've always wanted to make a fantasy rally car. The fantasy would be that my name would be on the driver door.
