2.6 Blowing out oil filters

My son's Rodeo had a massive oil dump on the road. After putting in a new filter and oil we were able to see that the oil was blowing out of the top of the oil filter. We ran the same test with another new filter; this time screwed in very tight and with the same result. My guess is either extremely high oil pressure or clog somewhere. My Haynes manual barely mentions the 4 cylinder, so I am having a difficult time knowing if we should remove the oil pump or the part that the oil filter connects to. I spoke to 2 mechanics, and they have never seen this problem. Has anyone else ever seen this problem? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Here's a punt out of left field....did the old seal ring pull out of the filter and stay on the mating flange?

Another thought - is the new filter definately the correct one? - if not the thread may be different enough to let you think it is tight but still leak. Perhaps try a different brand.

How much oil was in the engine, before the oil leak?
If the oil filter was tighten too tight, the rubber seal might of gone bad.

The oil filter should only be hand tight.
