1998 chevy blazer-4x4 not working

i just recently bought a 1998 chevy blazer & when i used the 4x4, it engages in the transfer case but not in the front axle.......a relative of mine had the same issue with his blazer & all he did was take apart the piece on the front differential where the cable is located & cleaned it because the 4x4 hadn't been used in a long time.........and his 4x4 worked great after that! any ideas for me? thanks

the transfer case that both the rear & front driveshafts go into!
