Jeep Shuts off after starting, then won't start back

I have been having an issue with my 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee for a few months now. It is a straight 6 cylinder 4.0 liter 4x4.

It started out as a very sporadic problem but has grown worse. When it occurs I start the jeep and then within a few seconds it will just shut off. There are no signs its going to shut off, it just dies. In conjunction with this I can not always get it to start back right away, it will take several attemps before it will start again. Everything sounds normal when I'm trying to start it, it just won't kick on. Also, after I have got it running and begin driving it will sometimes sputter and then die again.

At this point, the Jeep will not start period. I can hear the fuel pump kick on and start pumping, and then I can smell the fuel but it just never completes the final step and kicks on.

As of now the following have been changed:
Distributor Cap
Distributor Pick-Up Coil (x2)
Crankshaft Position Sensor (x2)
Ignition Coil (x2)
Fuel Pump
Fuel Pump Relay
ASD Relay

As you can see a couple of them have been changed twice just in case the replacement was defective, and no luck. From what I've read these are the most common possibilities but I don't have the luck of having the common problem lol. I'm getting ready to pull my hair out.

Also, the spark plugs and wires are only about 3 weeks old. I did however, pull them out and examine and they show no sign of anything wrong.

Any other thoughts?

I think you jeep have a problem with the ECM, did you disconet the battery some time in your jeep? if you did you need to reprogram the ECM, or this happen some times when the battery is not good, disconet and low voltage let me know how you doing ?

before reprogram the PCM check first the crank position sensor located behind engine R/H in the top of the transmission you will see the sensor you need a 10 millimeter socket to take out easy job good luck

I had the same problem with my 98 before. It happens like once a year. So easy do this:

1. Disconnect both the positive and negative battery cables.

2. Go into the Jeep and press the brake petal and horn and count 20 seconds. This will discharge the capacitors in the computer and reset the computer to factor settings.

3. Reconnect the battery.

4. Go try and start the Jeep. When you go to start it, give it a little gas.

I do this every time I have the problem you are having. It works every time and it runs fine after that. Hope this helps.
