Escort GT - waterpump help!!
Thanks to everyone who helped me with the timing belt removal in my other posts. While changing my timing belt, I realized that my waterpump (either the gasket or the pump itself) is leaking some fluid. I am trying to change this and I need help. I have to take off 2 bolts that connects the waterpump to the inlet pipe. Access to one of the bolts is blocked by A/C compressor and the oil dipstick tube. Does anyone know how to take this bolt off? (ie. how to take the dipstick tube off?) Thanks in advance.

Re: Escort GT - waterpump help!!
Remove the 4 bolts that hold the A/C comp. to the block. There is a casted piece of metal with 4 9/16 bolts remove that bracket and you can get to it. One piece of advice. The gasket where you have the two screws let it dry, I had to do mine 3 times before it would take. Finally went to ford and got the correct gasket. Took them about 3 wks. though.

thanks for the help. I was able to get to the bolt. But there is another problem. I am having some trouble pulling the waterpump out of the engine. Theres just not enough space for the waterpump to clear the engine and come out. How should I pull the waterpump out?

it really wouldnt make sense if so many other parts have to be taken out in order to just get the waterpump out of the engine.

It seems that I have to loosen the engine mounts and make more clearance for the waterpump. Did anyone else succeed with another method?

Re: Escort GT - waterpump help!!
I'm trying to work on my buddies 91 GT with the 1.8L to do that same thing (water pump). We're having a hard time removing the lower timing belt cover. The cover seems to be blocked by the oil dipstick tube as it's in front of it on the right side of the lower timing cover. Short of cutting the cover how do you get it off with the dipstick in the way? I thought we could just take the dipstick out but short of vice-gripping it craning it up we couldn't get it to budge. Any help would be appreciated as well as any info pertaining to getting the timing belt and water pump off. Thanks

Re: Escort GT - waterpump help!!
You need to take all of the bolts off of the lower timing belt covers. To access them, you would need to take your right(passenger) side right wheel, fender splash guard. If you did remove them, you should be able to wiggle them out of there. Make sure to take off the waterpump pulley also, so that you have clearance to take the cover off.

Forgot to mention, in order to take off the waterpump pulley, you need to take the p/s + a/c belt and alternator belt. You need to "loosen" the alternator adjust bolt and p/s adjust bolts so that you can get the two belts that go on waterpump pulley. After that it should be really easy to take the covers off.

How did you get the water pump out? Did you have to loosen engine mounts? I heard they were tight to get out and even tighter getting a new one in. Is it possible to replace water pump in 1.8L without dealing with engine mounts?

FYI. No need to adjust engine mounts to replace water pump. It is tight but I went through the bottom and when installing new one, rotated once in to get in place. But don't forget your gaskets, I had to slide one on near the end and it wasn't fun. Just in case this helps anyone.

Re: Escort GT - waterpump help!!
you dont have to remove engine mounts, just take the power steering reservoua out and the Black sphere next to it and it will give you plenty of room without breaking your knuckles.
but i do have a question, i have a rubber o ring with the water pump, where it goes???? Thanks any other question about access just ask, i try other ways and i tell you it will take you 3 seconds to get it out with out any problems once you remove those 2 things.(dont have to unplugged them, just take off the mounting bolts and get them out of the way.) |

As for your question, I haven't seen an escort in ages but many O-rings that come with the water pumps go on metal pipes that stick into the water pump. That's just a general answer as I really don't remember what the pump looks like...People still drive escorts?
