#040 looking like #061.... :(

Looks like Flemke got out OK and the car, despite looking quite bad, and it doesn't seem to have had too much damage.

Let's hope he is OK and the car isn't off the road for too long

I do hope Flemke and everybody else that was involved, are all OK.

I know it looks a sorry sight, but cars can be fixed.

Re: #040 looking like #061.... :(

Very sorry to see this news.

Hope for the best for Flemke and any others involved. Accidents are never enjoyable, nor is the pain you sometimes get a couple of days later.

Here's the German news article translated:

Quote:
McLaren F1 supercar crashes at Bendorf in traffic jam

Bendorf. € 100,000 damage to property by a moment of inattention: On the A48 from Koblenz is an approximately one million euros more expensive McLaren F1 been involved in an accident.

The maneuver of a dark compact car to be jointly responsible for that in the car, which was built only 100 times, a loss of an estimated 100,000 euros has been created.

The driver, an American businessman from New York, was traveling from the Westerwald in the direction of Trier. At the level of the exit Bendorf it happened: There had been a backwater. A small car then swerved to the left strip - as witnesses say, without blinking.

That was the fate of the 61-year-old approaching from behind in his super car He avoided the middle lane, but managed, not there in time to brake before the traffic jam. He went on to an Audi and then pushed the other to a small car.

Now will search for witnesses, require further information on the likely black / dark-gray compact car or say more about the accident.

The owner left the damaged F1, sold by the road-going version as only 72 pieces, just drag to the Nurburgring. A special company to fix it there. The driver was picked up by an Englishman with an AMG Mercedes SL.

In 1995 BMW CEO Bernd Pietschesrieder had driven an F1 to scrap when he went off on a Bavarian country road on a bend of the road.
Sounds like another car that left the scene was a contributing factor to the cause.

Bad news for Flemke, hopefully, it's just "cosmetic". I am sorry for him and hope the car will be ok.

You can read his own comments on PistonHeads.com - he was very much on the safe side of 200. They start at the bottom of this page:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/t...d=34901&i=4700

In fact if you look quite closely at this image you can see the skidmarks start about even with the nose of the car which is directly behind his:

To me that shows he didn't have much time to react given the point where he began what could probably be described as panic braking. At 70 mph you are moving at just over 100 feet per second and a standard F1 is rated to stop from that speed in 162 feet which is less than the distance we can see there by my estimate. Even with his upgraded brakes and better tires he didn't stand a chance. Speculating doesn't solve anything, but I think ABS is the only thing that would have prevented the collision - not because it would have reduced the stopping distance, but it would have preserved his steering control and perhaps allowed him another out.

I agree - philosophically the idea of a pure driver's car doesn't include ABS and I understand why the F1 doesn't have it, but I'd be willing to sacrifice a bit of purity for that single piece of technology.

Thanks Erik your link!
It was good to read, and most important thing is, everyone are OK and no huge damage hasn't happended to the F1.
The traffic is what it is, never know what others gets their head. They just turn the steering wheel and......
