Porsche 917K - #20 - Le Mans 1970

Hi Folks,

Here's one I knocked out recently (knocked out ha! Two months!). It's a Provence Moulage 917K built as the #20 Siffert\Redman car from the 1970 Le Mans. The body is, unfortunately, incorrect in some of its details. After months of looking on ebay, I was unable to locate the correct body. Most notably, the Le Mans car had a single filler cap located on the right side instead of the earlier arrangement of two shown here, and it also had NACA ducts behind the side windows. I thought I could probably move the fuel filler, but didn't give much chance of success at creating convincing NACA ducts, so just went ahead as is. The decals gave surprisingly little trouble for a kit of this age, although the windows had yellowed and become brittle and cracked when I tried to cut them; hence I was forced to pirate them from another kit. I didn't like the shape or size of the etch pieces for the tube frame around the motor, so I made new ones out of straightened paper clip. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out thus far.

The one detail I'd like to add is the black surround on the headlight tearaway sheets, but I haven't quite figured out a way to make them yet. You can see them below:

I thought of trying to trace the outline of the headlight on a piece of paper, then scan that, then use photoshop to draw the outline of the surround, then print it as a template. The final piece could perhaps be cut from very thin plastic wrap and attached with white glue. Any other ideas? I think the car really looks kind of incomplete without it...

Thanks for looking,

ianc

Just a little bump to see if anyone's got any easier suggestions for making the tearaway strips for the headlight covers? My way seems like a royal PITA...

Hi Ianc, nice little gem there, as for the tape around headlights, anything thicker then decal would be to much, I would take some black decal, cut it in stripes and put it on, just like the real thing, just be careful not to cut it to wide.

Hmm... thanks for the tip. Not sure I have any extra black decal in the stash though. Can sheets of precolored decal film be bought somewhere?

If you have any kind of CF decals, they all have black edge that is also decal, and can be used for this, also most of decal sheets have this black edges on them, check your stash a bit good luck.

I use Bare Metal Foil cut into strips, painted black and then applied.

There is a black chrome BMF, the only drawback is it is shiny.
I like the edge of the CF decal idea.

Good call on anything thicker than a decal would be too thick. Very good insight and thought on that one.

Excellent job on your model!!!!!!!!!
Yes, a little gem it is!

Re: Porsche 917K - #20 - Le Mans 1970

I am more into building vintage racers, so I'm embarrassed to admit that I don't have any CF decals...

BMF does sound like a very good possibility though, as I do have some of that hanging around, but I'm wondering how well the paint will adhere to it?

Thanks for the suggestions and and the compliments!

great model ianc911!!!! looks pretty good.
About the stripes for headlight, there is a black plastic tape using to aisle electricity wires that works prefectly for this.
Here in Mexico you can find this tape in most of big stores as wallmart.
Hope my english is good enough to help.

Hi Miguel,

Do you mean just standard electrician's tape? I would be a bit concerned about that because of its relative thickness, and also its ability to adhere reliably to the model. Thanks for the suggestion though!
