2007 Denali XL with piston slap????

My wifes Denali had a weird piston slap or sound that sounded like a diesel truck when she first started it up yesterday. She turned it off and restarted it and the sound did go away. I have read some info on this sound but thought that GM had fixed this. She says that it had a strong exhaust smell to it as well.

I know my 5.7 did the same thing when the weather was colder than shit...usually just goes away after a few seconds once the oil gets moving.
