'94 TS 3800: RPM Question
Was wondering roughly what my RPMs should be around 65 mph.
I think my OD is gone , I can feel it shift into 2 and 3rd gears but not the 4th. When I'm pushing 60-65 mph I'm running about 3k rpms and I doubt thats right. Thanks |

Re: '94 TS 3800: RPM Question
65mph in 4th with TCC is near 1850-1900 rpm.
TCC can apply on 3rd gear, then rpm would be about 2500. At 3000, TCC is not applied. Failed TPS will inhibit 3rd, TCC and cruise control. THen a code would show.

Re: '94 TS 3800: RPM Question
TCC: Torque COnverter CLutch: it acts as a clutch to lock up the power feed direct from engine to transmission without the "fluid cushion" loss of the torque converter. Saves gas. It kicks in at moderate speeds and since it is a very small clutch (built inside the torque converter) , it can only sustain light to moderate torque so it switches out and then torque falls back through the fluid converter as soon as you hit the throttle a little harder like for hill climbing, acceleration or overtaking..
TPS: Throttle Position Sensor: sends throttle pedal position to computer to control injection. It acts in addition to the mass air flow sensor (MAF) specially to avoid coughing when rapidly opening the throttle. Old time carburators had a built in tiny piston pump to inject an additional discrete amount of fuel insame conditions. SInce TPS info is used by the computer to control TCC, TCC action will be turned OFF and kept OFF as soon as TPS problem is detected. Is your CEL "check engine light" showing ?

Re: '94 TS 3800: RPM Question
TPS can be checked with an ohmeter.Total resistance is around 10,000 ohm..but value is not the point: measure resistance from the center pin to either end and have someone depress throttle: resistance must increase/decrease without misses or sudden changes.

Re: '94 TS 3800: RPM Question
First take a look at the TPS sensor itself, it's on the housing where the throttle cable ends.
It's a springloaded mechanical sensor made to follow the throttle valve. Some dirt can make it stick. On my car it was stuck in the full open position after a "full power take off". Some fiddling and WD40 fixed it. Good luck. Andy |

Re: '94 TS 3800: RPM Question
There's a switch on the brake that -according to the manual- can mess up the cruise control and the TCC. Check that one too before doing any major investment
