power problems

so i have big power issues. everytime i go to start my 97 jetta, the battery is dead. it all started when i hooked up my 1700 watt sound system. i know i know. "i must have wired it wrong." but i know i haven't. i have every extra piece of equipment for my car either unplugged or on switches, and i make sure they are all off when i reach my destination. now i don't think the battery is bad. i bought it in april or may of this past spring.

now what i think is wrong is the battery died, fully drained. and now i think whats happening is when i drive anywhere, the alternator doesn't produce enough electricity to both power everything in the car and recharge the battery. i have led's the sound system, xm, radar, gps all running everytime i drive. does that sound like a plausible idea. the alternator just isnt producing enough power to do everything?

now to my solution. i've been running ideas through my head and this one seems to make the most sense. buy a high performance battery, put it somewhere in the trunk, wire all my extra electrical stuff to the second battery and then wire both batteries to the alternator. then of course get the old battery recharged. that way the car will have a battery that won't have any purpose but to start the car and another to run electrical additions. does that sound like it would work?

Re: power problems

oh yeah. and my car was recently in the shop to have the alternator belt replaced (unrelated to power issue, just a bad night) and the mechanic tested it and said it was producing the proper amount of electricity for the stock 97 jetta. don't know if that was necessary
