transmission slips in all gears..car won't move.

I have a 94 Cherokee Sport. 4.0 with 4WD. The transmission started to slip last week so I changed the fluid. After that it ran great for 2 days and shifted smooth as glass. Yesterday I started to go to work and I was dead in the water within a block of the house. I made it back by putting it in 4wd H and low and creeped back home. But now it won't budge in any gear. One friend says it is the pump inside the transmission. Another says it is the filter. He swears "Change the filter and fluid and it will work." But I'm not sure. Any advise or thoughts will help.

Re: transmission slips in all gears..car won't move.

You mean you changed the fluid, but did not change the filter????

Respectfully, that was a mistake. When a trans slips, both the fluid and filter must be changed together.

I have found that a blocked filter has caused about one-third of my transmission slip issues.

I would agree with your friend. Drop the pan, clean it out and change the filter, and re-fill with NEW fluid again. You have a good chance of saving it.

However, by driving around with a slipping trans, instead of changing the filter, you just might have burned-up the clutches.

I say do the work and see how it goes. It's a lot cheaper than a new trans, so it's worth the risk.

Good luck.
