Do check your Onstar system yourself...

.

Approx 1.5 weeks ago, I accidentaly locked my keys in my van's ignition. First time this every happened to me. (very sad). At that time, I called Roadside Assistance and they patched me into Onstar Services. After checking account codes, Onstar Rep said my new van is "on record" but it isn't configured properly. Thus, why they had to dispatch a Tow Truck (to manually unlock my driver's door). Off to the dealer (for warranty work) and after 5 days, they told me the warranty work is done, and its Onstar system is working great. A few days later, my "inner voice" starts whispering at me. So, I called Roadside and they dispatched me into Onstar Services. A simple 15 second "free" check - to calm my inner voice was needed. Sure enough, my van's Onstar is NOT configured. Either my local GM dealer was BSing me, or it lost its configuration since last Thursday afternoon. Onstar Rep told to immediately take my van to nearest GM dealer. If they are unable to fix it, entire Onstar unit will be replaced - no questions asked. This Thursday/Friday, guess who's new van is going "back" to the local GM dealer? And if wondering, was told our Onstar 1-year "free" services starts on the day its Onstar is configured properly, not when we bought our new van (last March 30-2009). Actually, I like these Onstar folks. When it comes to safety and their Onstar system, there's no delay or fooling around. re: "Very sorry with immediate - it will get fixed FAST" tone.

Lesson learned: Do test your van's Onstar system yourself. Simply phone call your provided 1-800 RoadSide assistance number, asked to be transfered into Onstar Services. Then, ask they remotely verify that your vehicle's Onstar system is working properly. re: You in the drivers seat and them asking you to press verification buttons. Hopefully, your vehicle's Onsite system is "on record", "configured" and "active"....

Hope this lesson learned helps others...

I picked up my wife's 09 Montana van at my local GM dealer today. It appears the Onstar Rep was correct. My van's Onstar unit showed it was OK but it needed to be replaced. Simple in/out component replacement and a few codes to program (configure it). In the end, "NO charge". And, my vehicle's 1-year Free Onstar service starts today (instead of my van's purchase date - last March 30-2009). And, they also included 100 free minutes - on its cell phone feature (to ensure I was even more satisfied). Giant smile.

Gotta love a company that not only fixes what is broke but also includes FREE things - to ensure one is more satisfied.
