98 cherokee. fuel pump not running

I have a 98 cherokee classic. The fuel pump isnt running. I checked all the fuses they were ok. I then trying switch the fuel pump and other relays with each other to see if they were bad but still no fuel pump. I dropped the tank and tested the fuel pump and it runs fine when jumped directly to a battery. so i put everything back together and am stuck on what to check next. Oh yeah the gas gage reads empty and it has a 1/2 tank of gas. If you have any suggestions or ideas they would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Andy B.

Re: 98 cherokee. fuel pump not running

when you turn the key to the on position is the check engine light coming on for about 2 seconds then going off? sounds like a pretty straight forward wire trace could do the trick here.

Re: 98 cherokee. fuel pump not running

OK well then you need to be looking into why your check engine light is not coming on because that will be causing your no fuel problem. start out by checking all your fuses under hood and inside the jeep. specifically any fuses marked ECM, ECU, or PCM. you also need to check your main relay. the check engine light has to come on for 2 seconds then go off when you turn the key to the on/run position (the furthest you can turn it without cranking the motor over). this is call the computers self check. if no check engine light comes on then the engine will not start it will have no fuel or spark. i had this same problem with a 96 jeep Cherokee. the one i was working on ended up being a bad relay in the under hood relay center. hope this helps you some. any questions dont hesitate to ask.
