2005 Ford Explorer, Problem with Brakes

2005 Ford Explore, V6, about 65,000 miles. When applying brakes I hear rubbing noise and then just before coming to a stop I hear kind of a clunk. Also, when going 5 miles an hour or so and applying the brakes I hear a rubbing noise. The rubbing noise sounds like when you have metal to metal, but as I said I checked the pads and there is no metal touching the rotors. I checked the pads and there is about a 33% remaining. Could it be one or both of the calipers? How do you check calipers? Thanks for any help.

to check the caliper (lets say drivers front tire) jack the front of vehicle up and put jack stands in place for safety (safety first) now try to rotate front driver side tire is it real tough to rotate can you rotate it at all now unscrew the bleeder screw and see if it rotates now or did it get easier to rotate .if it rotates now or is easier to rotat it is probably the brake hose collapseing hope this helps

Keep in mind that this is not going to work if your vehicle has all wheel drive. If AWD, you need to get all four wheels safely off the ground. Even then though, there will be resistance to rotating a front wheel.
