Timing chain and gears, and tuning lifters

Next on my journey to getting my Blazer running right are the timing chain and gears. I have the parts, but I would like to know any tips for changing the set on a 1992 S10 Blazer, 4.3L, 4x4, TBI, 220,000. Are there any shortcuts or should I follow the shop manual as is.
After changing the chain and gears, are there any steps to tuning the engine?

I recently replaced the lifters and rods and I believe I need to re-tune those. Is that something that needs to be done after the chain is replaced, or does it matter? How do you adjust lifters?? I did it by the book: remove lash, one full turn. Are there any other ways of fine tuning lifters?
