2500HD Wheels 17X8.5 ???

I have done a little bit of searching for this info, however, I haven't found the exact answer.

I have a 2004, 2500HD 4x4 with a two inch leveling kit in the front. The wheels are currently 16X6.5 (stock) with 285/75R16 Super Swamper tires. These tires kinda run big and are close to 34 inches tall. I want wider wheels and possibly upgrade to a 17 inch. I was told that a 10 inch wide wheel is too wide and will cause severe rubbing on a stock truck and that I need an 8 inch wide wheel. My question is......Is an 8.5 inch wide wheel too wide......I mean it's only half and inch difference, right. What's the proper back spacing for no rubbing? I'm also thinking about going with a 305 tire.

The plastic valance is already completely removed, no worries there.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 2500HD Wheels 17X8.5 ???

I understand the fact that nobody has any knowledge on this matter, however, I have some new findings..........

So far, to the best of my knowledge, you can fit a 17x9......

It depends on the back spacing and the offset.

Most rims will give you a 4.5 inch back space which is OK for a 17x8, however, for a 17x9, a 5.75 inch back space would be better. 5.75 inch back space would drive the wheel inward, which in turn, has little to no rubbing of the tires while turning. When the wheels/tires stick farther out, the tires rub on certain body parts.

When I find a good combination I will post my updated findings.

Smile Re: 2500HD Wheels 17X8.5 ???

Upon further investigation, in other forums, I learned that the wheels from Hummer H2's fit the best and will allow for running 315/70R17 (35 inch tires). I went out and purchased a used set for $300, and installed them. Low and behold, they fit just fine. I only had to do some minor plastic trimming.

I also have the 2 inch leveling kit in the front. So far no rubbing.

I'm not too fond of the H2 wheel look, however, it works!
