2010 Sierra first oil change

Did my first oil change on my 2010 Sierra 5.3L Flex fuel with Mobile 1 5w-30 and a AC Delco filter. This morning I noticed at startup a rather large plume of what looked like oil smoke. This was after sitting for about 3 hrs. Anyone heard of any issues with this combination? I've been running the same thing in our 07 Tahoe with no problems.

If you put too much oil in the engine , this will occur..synthetic mobil 1 oil is an oil I use in my vehicle with no engine issues over many miles/years . 5-30WT IS THE CORRECT OIL.

iF this continues I would have the engine checked out by the dealer..post back if there are problems with this model/year..

the use of an ac delco oil filter is no longer my choice or recommended by me...this is no longer made by GM but another company [champion ] ....poor quality on assembly/internal..

Re: 2010 Sierra first oil change

Checked the level and its hard to tell with new oil but looks to be at the full level. The only thing I can think of at the moment is that these new engines have variable valve timing and therefore may have different seals and the thin synthetic may be getting by the seals. Will most likely change it tonight to a petroleum based 5-30 and see how it does. All I can say is it scared the &%^&* out of me.

Re: 2010 Sierra first oil change

mobile 1 is the dealership recommmended synthetic oil for gm products...can't see that being the problem. It is factory required for all their vettes, turbo and supercharged engines.

yeah...a/c delco is no longer gm oem...learned it the hard way when replaced a wheel bearing on a grand am...(hate it when new parts go bad) ended up replacing with a gm oem part that fixed the problem

Any opinions on changing back to petro based or should I just take it to the dealer?

I would never use dino oil again. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE OIL...and you used the correct filter ...

If this blows out blue smoke on starting and you have the correct amount of oil in the engine, return to dealer .... just mention what your concerns are...do not say anything about what oil you used as this is not the issue...

don't give them anything that will create a way of avoiding the problem...

I'm not sure BUT ,,,,,these engines I THINK use a bypass type of oil filter..I don't think it is the old style 5.3L engine oil filter of prior years....

what a/c filter did you use ?

Used a PF48 per owners manual and visual verification on the one I took off.

good ! that is the new style check valve filter..has a bypass spring valve set to about 12 psi I believe...very small ...

when you start your new engine and its cold out, this will surely be in the bypass mode....hopefully for you and others this will not be another GM screw up....I don't like this where , the oil when , cold bypasses the filter media...with synthetic the cold flow is very high why use this style is a question ......to be answered....

I JUST REMEMBERED YOU CANNOT INSTALL THE WRONG FILTER...HAS VERY ODD THREADS....

Re: 2010 Sierra first oil change

Good to know I can't screw it up (so to speak). Just got home and will let it cool down a bit then I think I'll see if I can drain about 1/2 qt out of it (which Im sure will end up being a mess) One thing of interest was I went out twice this afternoon to start it to see if the problem persisted and unfortunately it did. However, when I left for the day (had been sitting about 1.5 hrs) I remote started it so I could see if it blew smoke and this time not a puff. Started like usual. Go figure.

with the filter changed this engine takes 6qts....actually 6.1 qts...so it still has the same capacity as my 2000 5.3L takes...

GM in its attempt to save a few pennies appears to have put all their efforts to make a one filter, fits all ...PF48 is the filter...

wix has a filter that is compatible WIX 57060...

Re: 2010 Sierra first oil change

All very strange but it seems to have sorted itself out. Parked in the garage last night to let it sit and cool so I could drain a bit of oil. After two hours I went out and started it, nothing. No smoke just a normal start. I went ahead and pulled a little less than 1/2 qt out of it and took it down the road to get it warmed up. Pulled into the drive let it sit for an hour and tried again. Again, all normal. Two hours later same thing as well as this morning. I'm baffled but glad it appears to have stopped.

did you over fill it ? how many qts did you put in ?

I always have the front of the vehicle higher than the rear , then drain oil for about 1/2 hour with the oil hot............

Re: 2010 Sierra first oil change

I can't see that it was overfilled but there could have been a bit remaining in the pan when I changed and I let it drain for about 20 minutes. What's strange is that it seems to have stopped smoking before I removed any oil. After the removal of less than a half qt it's showing just shy of full on the dipstick. I'll run it there a few days to see what happens.

I leave the drain plug off when the filter is removed sometimes a good amount of oil will flow out of the drain plug..when the engine is hot it should flow out very fast..hard to overfill if you installed 6qts...

your problem given the new vehicle is too much oil...the only other item would be the crankcase vent system...check all those hoses..
