Can you replace oil pan gasket w/out lifting up motor?
Like the title says, is it possible? Or advised? I've seen oil pan gaskets advertised as one piece so is there one's that have a split? I'm thinking that would be easier to maneuver into place if it has a split in it...I don't know. My oil pan leaks near the back (since day one of this new motor). I think it's because I wasn't generous enough with the liquid gasket stuff in the corners back there. Anyways my trani blew up the other day so while it's out of the car I was hoping to fix the oil pan leak and replace my flywheel too.

Re: Can you replace oil pan gasket w/out lifting up motor?
You could probably get a new gasket in there without lifting the engine, however, the hard part would be to remove and clean the old gasket material from the block and oil pan with limited room to work.
I replaced my oil pan gasket a while ago but I did raise my engine to do it since I needed to remove the pan to replace the oil pump anyway. I used some wood blocks to prop up a small scissor jack placed under the harmonic balancer to raise the engine. It really was not a big deal to do.. Good luck

Re: Can you replace oil pan gasket w/out lifting up motor?
with disconnecting the motor mounts and raising the engine with the tranny out,,,then getting a rubber pan gasket and cuting it in an area that when mounted you can easily get at to glue back together...cut the gasket at a 45deg angle rather than 90 deg..that way it will lap...
as mentioned earlier the hard part is to completely remove all oil from pan and engine mounting surfaces,,,this is how these gaskets fail to hold back the oil...also give the gasket sealant 24hrs to set.. another method than can work is no gasket,,,use rubber sealant coat the pan surface with a 1/4inch bead as even as possible let it set for 30 min then lightly torque the pan in place... the hard part of this would be to lay down an even bead of sealant..as well as cleaning.. |
