Steering wheel clicking and sticking

Hi All,

I just started noticing my steering wheel is making a clicking sound when turning left and right at certain points. Also, at low speeds I can feel the steering wheel almost sticking, right before the clicking occurs. Anyone have this before or hear anything of the sort? I hope it has nothing to do with my rack and pinion which I just replaced six months ago. Any thoughts and help is much appreciated as always. Thanks.

It could be the rack and pinion. Or else the intermediate shaft. I suggest you grease the intermediate shaft and see if that helps at all.

Re: Steering wheel clicking and sticking

so, i went back to the shop i had my rack done in feb. the owner honored the 1yr warranty on the rack he had replaced. he put in another reconditioned ac delco rack. the steering is now a lot tighter and not pulling at all, but it is still pretty hard to turn in comparison to how my steeting used to be. the clunking sound is not as frequent and i am more concerned about the difficulty in turning. you think this could still be the intermediate steering shaft or maybe i just have to "break" in the new rack? thoughts? thanks again.

Re: Steering wheel clicking and sticking

If you rev your motor up to about 1000rpm's does the steering get easier to turn?

You could have a bad power steering pump.

Or maybe one of your ball joints, struts, or strut bearing plates are siezing up.

Re: Steering wheel clicking and sticking

reving to 1000 rpm does not really help the hard turning of the steering wheel. how can i check if the pump is failing? i was checking the p/s level and it looked fine and i even kept it open and had someone else turn the wheels in place and the pump looked to be pumping, but i guess it could be hard to determine if it is pumping correctly?

Re: Steering wheel clicking and sticking

If it were my car, I would jack up the front end, put it on jackstands, and then unhook the tie rod ends. Maybe even replace them if they are stock.

Once they are unhooked, you can turn each wheel/strut by hand and see if it requires excessive force. If so, a ball joint, strut, or strut bearing is binding up.
