ok i drive a 97 camaro and my service engine light came on recently,i had it checked and they said it was either my o2 sensor or a faulty plug so now when i drive slow it shakes a little like i have a flat or something its only when i drive slow and the stickshift moves alot, what do you guys think a faulty plug would cause this or o2 sensor or something else,i only have enough money 2 fix 1 of the two right now, just seeing if you guys could help me narrow it down

Re: service engine light
What was the exact trouble code(s)?
Does the exhaust sound "choked up" during the shaking? |

Re: service engine light
ok the exact code is p0420 catalyst system efficiency below threshold and the exhaust sounds fine

Re: service engine light
ok im gonna answer my own question here in case anybody else want to know
P0420 refers to Bank 1 Sensor 2 (right hand downstream). The downstream (aka "rear") sensor's purpose is to monitor the efficiency of the cat. If a cat goes bad, you'll get P0420 for Bank 1, and P0430 for Bank 2. Simetimes it is the sensor that has gone bad. The sensor gets "lazy" with age. The PCM references the sensor switching frequency. If the sensor switches slow, it sets a code. Usually this means the cat is bad, but if the sensor is old, it may be the sensor at fault. A diagnostic scanner will report the sensor switching speed. Compare that data with a tail pipe sniff test (emission tester). If the emissions are withing spec, the cat is working, if the cat has failed, emissions will be high and out of spec. It is much less expensive to replace an O2 sensor than a cat, so start there. so after reading this it helped me out a lot, last week i just did my emmisions after shutting my code of and my emmisions came out perfect so thank god i didnt have to spend $$$$ on a new cat,so i changed the o2 sensor (aka the rear one) and that seems to have fixed the problem

Sup stully, anyways I don't mean to hog your thread but I still have that code(I think is that same p0420 or something) anyways I got a 2000 firebird 3.8 right, but when I installed a high flow cat. That code came up, someone told me it was the o2 sensor, so I changed it and nothing changed. Time passed and I had to change the cat cuz it went bad, the after rutine maintenace and putting premium, the code went away. But now the same code is back
