stock valve springs/retainers - 420a
How many pounds safely does everyone think i can run with the stock springs and retianers? I have a built block, just don't want to buy them unless i really need them.

How high do you plan on reving the motor? I am running a stock head and have taken it up t0 25psi with no problems. But only to about 6.5k, if you plan on reving it much higher or running over 30psi of boost I would upgrade them.

Re: stock valve springs/retainers - 420a
maybe 7000 at most, but i could keep it to 6500 if i have to. But when you buy new springs, all you really preventing is valve floating right? So if i don't rev it real high like a dumbass i should be fine. What about putting cams in it in the future? Will they be needed then?

Re: stock valve springs/retainers - 420a
If you put cams in it then I would change them out. You may be able to get away with it if your where NA. I think the main issue is that people want to rev higher after upgrading and the stock springs can't keep up. Stock springs are around 45lbs if I remember right. So add 25psi of boost and you now only have half of that spring pressure closing the intake valves

Re: stock valve springs/retainers - 420a
Stock springs are made to hold all the way to redline. However, time takes its toll on them making them weaker. The only time you really NEED better springs are with mild cams. Even "stage 1" (for lack of a better term) can still use stock springs with no problems as long as they're in good shape. My springs are upgrade since I have "stage 2" cams and a fully built head. I knew it was going to be seeing boost, so did it all.
