1997 plymouth voyager incident!!!
Driving 160 mile RT, no previous problems! Get there( 80 MILES AWAY) and what happens: I stop at he stoplight wait a few seconds.... The van stalls... start it up at the stoplight, put it in D, stalls! Start it up again idles fine try to put it into D again: STALLS! Still at the stop light I start it Up again give it some gas and switch into D, little hesitation and it goes INTO D and away we go... Once you come to another stoplight/stop and slow down below 20MPH...stalls! Drives fine on the highway. Pull into a gas station to get gas Stalls at gas pump. Fill up Go into reverse and it STALLS! Again having to give it some gas during gear switch and I go home no problem. Wake up the next morning and all day the next day no stalling, hesitation or any other problem. ?? TOTALLY CONFUSED!!

Re: 1997 plymouth voyager incident!!!
sounds like you have a problem with the TCC sticking.
There is a solenoid that drives a valve. That valve passes fluid into a port that applies the torque converter clutch (TCC). If either one of those sticks open, it will cause the engine to stall every time you are in gear and not moving. You said that it stalls below 20, are you sure that is not more like 10 or less? When you are stopped and place the selector in D or R does it stall with a lurch? (like a standard does when you drop the clutch without any gas) when you come to a stop does it stall as if a standard is in gear with out the clutch depressed? (Remember that as soon as the engine stalls there is no fluid pressure inside the tranny so it goes into “neutral”.) a few guys are going to bang off " get the tranny scanned". I bet that you will spend a lot of money to have them tell you that everything is fine,,, because it is not doing it when you get to the tranny shop Just for what ifs and may-bees I would toss in a little tranny cleaner, drive it for 500 miles then do a filter and fluid change. what tranny is in that the three or 4 speed? in any event there is a tranny control computer. I would be prepaired to test the TCC CKT state, and wait till it happened again. if the condition is aplplied when the car has just stalled and the key is on/run than you have a control issue. If the test is off, you may have a transmission problem with the TCC valve or solenoid |

That is exactly what it did that time!! Is the TCC expensive to replace? I have the 4 speed a/t.

Try some Seafoam Tranny conditioner, does wonders for cleaning sticky valves in tranny, like thisnametooktolong suggests. I had a 93 Voyager that the tranny would not engage into reverse or drive when shifted. added some seafoam conditioner and problem disappeared and workied fine.
good luck |

I don’t think that it is the Torque converter clutch (TCC) they usually slip and not stick. I am confident that it is the solenoid pack. I am not positive because I am not sure of what tranny you have. But if is the common 4 speed tranny, you can change that with common wrenches in your driveway. But depending on the year and model, IT CAN BE A PAIN. Maybe 4-6 hrs with basic tools and a beer in your hand…… maybeeeeeee 1-2 if you have done it before with a few moded tools and a 3/8 air ratchet, and wait for the beer on payday. The barely soda slows you down a lot as well as help because it is a one man job and you keep stopping to talk and ……………. The hole thing unbolts with out to much hassle and changes as a unit, around 200$ depending on where you get it from. What tranny did you say you have a gain? That is the big question??????????? |

Re: 1997 plymouth voyager incident!!!
if its not the tcc than itsounds like the idle air control valve is not doing its job. its a little plunger valve located on the throttle body that keeps your car idling under load (air conditioning, going into drive or reverse) and not high idling when not under load. if it was an intermittent occurence you will get no check engine lite. may have a plugged passageway there.
