Fun, Fast, AWD daily driver

I am heading out to school in Washington this year and am going to need a car that can handle the mountains. I want a car that is reliable first and foremost but I also really want a car that is quick and that I can work and and make faster. AWD drive is pretty important due to snowy mountains and such. Budget - would like to be around $5000 but $10000 is probably the max. Let me know if anyone has any suggestions. I would love to hear them. Thanks!
