Oil change info needed for 530i

I just bought a used 1994 530i. How much can I expect to pay for an oil change (Live in Calif)? Also what type/grade should I use? The vehilce has 160,000 miles. How many miles in between should I go prior to servicing oil. Thanks.

Re: Oil change info needed for 530i

Not sure if you have service indicator lights on your dash or not, pretty sure you'll need the onboard computer. If you do you should have 4 or 5 green light that shows up when you turn the key to the 1st position. If the car has been properly maintained, the lights will let you know when and what service is due(all the green will disappear and the amber lights will show). I have a 97 528i, BMW recommendes that the oil be changed every 10,000 mi or once per year. That could probably work, but I don't chance it. I change the oil every 5,000 mi. I use castrol syntec, thats the oil that was used since the car was new. You would have to make a judgement call, if full syntec oil wasn't used before then you could use a 5w or 10w 30 quality motor oil; it won't do any good or harm to switch to syntec due to the high mileage. If full syntec has been used for all changes then keep using it, it's the best protection for the engine. enjoy.

I've been driving bimmers for 25yrs, owned over 60 of them. I have a 94 530I It takes 8qts of oil and a kinda special oil filter only from bmw. I only use Mobile 1 its the best don't go much over 4000miles....Bill.

More on the same question. I like Mobile 1 10-30. Your oil change with the correct oil filter can cost over $75.00. Plus another $100.00 at the dealer....Learn what you can, you have a very complicated car, get the 5-series service manual, and hope your trans don't go out.... That can cost way over $5k, and no body can fix them, Bmw only replaces them.. For about $7k, no joke.
