95 Royal 88 charging problem
I have been lurking here for a few months reading up and learning about the 96 Royal 88. I picked up the repair manual at the local parts store also.
Picked up a 95 Royal 88 with 52,000 miles. It sat for2-3 years in a covered carport. After removing the mouse nest under the engin cover I descovered that the wireing harness had been chewed up. I replaced a section of wire to one of the injectors, checked the fluids, jumped the battery and it fired up. Big suprise to me. I drove the car from Jonesboro to Memphis. About half way home the brake light and ringer dinger/ buzzer came on. After I got home I looked at the brake reservoir and it looked full. Opening the top I discovered that the reservoir was low and that the plactic reservoir was stained and had funk on the inside looking from the outside like it was full. Filling it up the light went off and all was fine. Since then I have replaced the water pump, tires, oil and filter, tail light socket, air filter and both side mirrors. Last week the wife called and said the the car died. She said that the battery/volt light, the ABS light and the check engine light came on and after about 10 minutes, it began to lose power, and eventually died. I jumped and charged the battery for a few minutes and got it home and replaced the alternator. Four days later this happened agian and I replaced the battery. Today, three days later, this happened agian. New, not rebuilt, alternator and new battery from Car Quest. No lights come on inbetween events. So what am I missing here? A friend gave me a Radio Shack/ Realistic volt/amp meter but don't know how to read it. |

Re: 95 Royal 88 charging problem
Trace the small wire which bolts onto the alternator to ensure it wasn't also chewed anywhere. And of course make sure it was reconnected when you changed out the alternator. Any problem with that wire and it won't charge, and won't set any lights either. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Re: 95 Royal 88 charging problem
I bought a digital meter. Read the instrustions and learned how to use it. Checked the new alternator and it was putting out 11.5 amps. Exchanged it, at Car Quest, for another and it put out 13.5 amps. Good to go now.
Thanks for the info on the small wire. I did check the wires after checking with the meter, just in case. I also found that the master cylinder was leaking and went ahead and replaced it too. Charles |
