1996 Lumina turning signal handle
Good day!
When handle is pressed to indicate the right turn, it does not return to the "pre-pressed" position after the vehicle had made the turn. It's stuck in the lower position and the blinker is still blinking. Is there anything I can do myself in the steering column to fix that/ Thanks in advance. |

Re: 1996 Lumina turning signal handle
Same thing on my 96 Lumina, except the left indicator. I was told by dealership that the entire assembly has to be replaced. Have to take apart the steering wheel assembly...cost $400.

I know this is an old thread, but if people are going to dig it up, I would like to provide what I think is an accurate and proper answer. Quote:
These columns use tiny springs as part of the turn signal mechanisms. When the spring breaks, the signal lever no longer cancels itself. The springs cost just a couple of dollars. You have to remove the steering wheel to access them. Once the wheel is off, the replacement takes just a few seconds. Personally, I think working around a steering wheel airbag is not for a beginner. It can be very dangerous so may be wise to let a pro swap them over. But its a quick and easy repair. You should replace bot the left AND right turn return spring. If one broke, the other may not be far behind. |
