Won't shift into 4 hi

My 1997 GMC Sierra has the push button 4wd. I have 4 low but not 4HI. If it is the encoder how do you check to make sure? Is it on the transfer case of the front differential? Does anyone have a picture of this on the truck so it we be easy to find?
