92 Buick no spark

Friend has this vehicle and they have changed the ignition module.I have limited experience with distributor less ignition systems and would like some help.I do believe that if there is no signal from the crank sensor to the ignition module,then there will be no spark?The ignition module sends a signal to the ECM and the ECM will control the injectors?Are these correct statements?How can you check the crank sensor?There is power to the sensor with the key on.Three pins had power,one with 12 volts and two with 6.7 volts.Continuity to the sensor from the ignition module is good.I have read other forums and many have had success with replacement of the crank sensor.Friend has spent money on this vehicle and would like a definite solution to get his vehicle back on the road.Thanks for the help.

Correction, GM does not fire the spark or the injectors until it has had 1 crank and 1 cam puls. If either one is bad the engine will not fire. Besides that, you are correct. Without a scanner you will need a good DVOM, back probe the signal wire for the puls to the ECM turn over the engine….. Do you get 5 volts?

You can check the cam sensor by pulling it out back probing the signal wire and passing a magnet past the sensor face. Does the VOM jump? If they work that much it should be just enough to fire.

Why did you change the ICM? You may want to check for bent pins in the plug. Did you replace it with a used piece?

Start out old school; are all fuses good? Etc etc etc

Thanks for the response.I did not change the ICM.The owner did the change with a new one purchased at Lordco.I was called after the owner had enough.Can you tell me which wire at the ECM do I back probe and the location of the ECM?There is 12 volts to the ICM.I have read other posts about no spark and most are pointing to the crank sensor.Is this a weak spot for this type of ignition system?

I would have to look them up. There was a post a little while back that some one posted the diagram for the hole shooting match. type 1 and two ignitions uses the same wires

There is an issue with these particular engines and the crank position sensor. If the sensor fails it will not start as you will have no replace it. The ignition module gets its reference from the CPS and without that it will not fire. Try changing it before doing anything else and see what happens. If you don't have a repair manual I suggest you purchase one as it will help you quite a bit in finding component locations.
