Car won't hold an idle/run, I'm stupid
When leaving work today, my car killed and ran out of gas. No big deal, went into the garage, got a gas can and proceeded to fill my tank with ~3 gallons. Car starts right up, I pull 10 feet into the street and it dies again. I don't know if it was old/bad gas or if it was mixed, the container didn't say mixed gas, so I don't know what to think. I have since put 5 gallons of clean gas into the tank, and I get the same; car starts, idles for 2 seconds, and dies again. I've done this probably 15 times, attempting to run the old gas out of the lines. Have I just not cleaned the lines well enough? I've tried to siphon the tank with a small electric pump I have, but I got nothing but vapors. Should I attempt to remove the tank to drain it? Add more gas in hope that it will dilute the bad fuel? Replace fuel filter? I know a good shop whose brains I could pick, but they aren't open until Monday and I have to get to work before they open.
I have read different things on google, from "it's fine, it will just burn the oil off and may run poorly", to "it may foul your plugs if done frequently", to "I've done it many times and my car ran fine". Could it just be coincidental in that it could be something besides the gas? It seems to run better (used in the loosest of terms), in which it will hold an idle for around 10 seconds before dying. I'm kinda stuck as to what to do next. Any help/prior experiences would be greatly appreciated. The car is a 1993 Regal 3800. |

Have you checked fuel pressure?

Re: Car won't hold an idle/run, I'm stupid
I have not. I tried looking for the fuel rail's release valve yesterday but couldn't find it in the 30 seconds I looked. I'll take a look today. I might have a pressure gauge laying around, but I have a friend who probably has one if I need to borrow it.
Edit - I decided to go ahead and replace the fuel filter, it was only 7 bucks and hasn't been done in the 25k I've owned the car. I'll report back with how it went after it stops raining. Last edited by pimfram; 06-06-2009 at 12:59 PM. |

Re: Car won't hold an idle/run, I'm stupid
I decided that, since I couldn't get the fuel filter off, I would bring it in on Monday. I know a good shop, they'll probably know exactly the right route will be. I'll update when I get the car back.
Edit - It was the fuel pump that was bad, not the gasoline. Turns out it was just a coincidence. Last edited by pimfram; 06-09-2009 at 05:18 PM. |
