99 Mustang starter prob.

Recently had the engine replaced, due to a broken piston. Upon replacement, noticed a slight smell coming from under the hood, maybe an exhaust of some sort? Anyway, started up okay, sounded like paper hitting a fan in park. Soon as i dropped it into gear, the noise stopped. Shut off engine, restarted it, same thing. Then after about 5 minutes of idling, heard a little "pop", car instantly stopped running for about a half of second, then continued to run. I shut the engine off, now I get one click when I turn the key, then nothing. Starter maybe?

I would pull the starter sometimes the bendix will stick. Look at the teeth while it is out and roll the engine over by hand.

Could be a flywheel, or the motor could have come apart internally. I wouldnt bank on the starter causing the motor to miss a beat. You can try the starter but i've got a feeling its not the starter. Good luck.

Re: 99 Mustang starter prob.

Well, I replaced the starter on it , shut it on and off a few times, checked it out. Everything was ok, drove it to work, came out of work 8 hours later, nothing. Not even a click. What the f. Like I said, I just put an engine with 66k miles in back in March. (with a year warranty on it, so that's not an issue.

Manual or automatic? Each has it's own path for starter troubleshooting.

Automatic. Its got a 6cyl 3.8 engine.I was told there might be a solenoid between the starter and the battery? Could this be my problem?

Yes it "could" be, but i wouldn't bank on an intermittent problem from the solenoid.. You say you just put the motor in it.. I would check ALL of the ground straps and your main ground to the block. Have seen that cause a no start or "short" click.

Re: 99 Mustang starter prob.

Well, today I went to work on the car, and it fired right up. It would not start last night, now all of a sudden today, its okay. Next thing I noticed was that when she started, it idled super-low for about 3-4 seconds then was good to go. Also now, the trip odometer which is digital, flickers on and off. Is it electrical somewhere? Bad ground,???
