'99 Sunfire Engine Question

Does anyone have a list of the Pontiac engine families? Such as what model and year engine fits what other models and year engines? My true reason for searching for this info is that I have a '99 Sunfire 2.4L that died. I'm not sure if the 2.2L version from a '99 Sunfire would fit or not. Also, I know that the Cavalier has the same engine and I'm curious what model year Cavalier would fit my '99 sunfire. I just want to have the largest pool of engines to choose from that I can. Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: '99 Sunfire Engine Question

the GM 2.4L will fit, Cav, Fire, etc. The 2.2L is a different transmission bellhousing and will NOT fit.
IIRC the 99 year was new and will not work with older models, something about the knock sensor or cam sensor, or something, as well as the computer and I think injectors. your best bet is to search on J-body.org for the info.

It's best to just get a 99 model year crate motor (you can get them from Pace performance) and do a direct swap, plug and play.

What happenend to you motor if I might ask?

Re: '99 Sunfire Engine Question

The engine has been consuming oil since almost day one. Well....maybe not day 1, but for a while. There have been a LOT of tests run to find out where the oil is gonig, but no luck. I was driving the vehicle and noticed a faint knocking sound coming from the engine that progressively got louder over a period of a week until the engine just gave out. The mechanic said he found bits of metal in the oil pan. Odd because even though it consumed oil, it was well maintained and oil was added at regular intervals. Anyways, that's what happened. As far as getting a crate motor, it makes zero sense to do this because the car would barely be worth the cost of the motor after swap. Thanks for you help, though.

Re: '99 Sunfire Engine Question

Gees, when you drove the car off the lot it lost 3 grand in value LOL.

I've got around $5k in motor (the custom motor, not my $2500 HO crate engine) in my car, not including the supercharger setup, which puts me to almost $8000 total.

I know it doesn't make sense to buy a $2500 motor, but, it's a zero mile unit that will keep the car alive for about 10 more years (low estimate).

Sounds to me like you had a bad head gasket or blowby on one of the cylinders, causing you to burn the oil. The knocking you heard was either a rod bearing (most likely answer) or a crank bearing. Too bad, it was a nice car I'm sure.
