How do I get the shifter to move from park with a dead battery? Some how I did it once and now I can't do it to save my life.

Re: 96 escort
There is a way to bypass the park safety switch. Look for a little plastic flap on the right of the gear shift selector. Pry it up and you will see a little button inside. Stick something small enough to get into the hole such as a small screwdriver. Depress this little button as you shift out of park. This should work for you.
