99 Cavalier over heat/no start

I have a 99 2.2 that overheated and then gave some trouble starting. It would crank and try to fire but until I held it to the floor it would not start. I have good spark, fuel pressure, plugs, wires. I tried starting it with the starting fluid but that caused a backfire stupid move). It still acts like it wants to start but will not . Anyone have any idea where else I should start looking? Compression test? Pick up coil? Help please!

Re: 99 Cavalier over heat/no start

How much and for how long did it overheat? Overheating will blow head gaskets.

So it started once you held the pedal to the floor?

A compression test is the next step, also check for injector pulse to be sure fuel is making it into the cylinders. Since it backfired (I assume you mean through the intake?), make sure the timing is correct.

Smile Re: 99 Cavalier over heat/no start

It got HOT to the point it would not even roll over. Not sure how to check the timing on this as I see no marks and I think the computer makes the adjustments. Used the Noid light and have pulse at all injectors so I do not think fuel is the trouble. Fuel pressure was within specs in key on position. Will not start so I have no clue if it is in the run position. Will check compression shortly. BTW this is a friends car and I think the head is my trouble because he filled it with water while it was HOT. I think we should do away with the computers and go back to old school cars that ran on fuel air spark and compression. I must be getting old!!! Thanks for the help.
