1991 Trouble Code 41

Hi, just got this car from mom, been driving it so far no trouble. it has 155,000 miles on it. Today when getting on the freeway, I got on it really hard, then the engine light came on...Use a code reader from WalMart and got a code 41...Have noticed a few times over the last few weeks when starting first time in morning, it stumbles then picks up, not sure if that is related to this, but may be a symptom of the problem causing the code. Has anyone had this problem, know what I should look at first. The book lists a few different issues, so not sure which one to start with...Thanks in advance for your help...Also, anyone know where to find the CAM sensor?

My Chilton's manual shows it being next to the harmonic balancer(bottom of engine)just to the right.

That is about right. You (the original poster) should have invested in a Chiltons instead of a code reader (you can pull codes for free with the use of a paperclip).

Do a forum search for "code 41" with quotes and you will find plenty of information. Basically, the cam sensor circuit has an issue. This means that either the cam sensor itself ($12, fairly easy job), the wires running to the cam sensor to the ECM are pinched, or the cam sensor interruptor magnet located on the camshaft sprocket was thrown ($8 part, but insanely hard to get at...involves removing the front cover of the engine to do it right).

Most likely, the plastic cage around the magnet was brittle anyway and when you gunned the engine the cage finally broke, throwing the magnet into the oil pan.

I have acess to two cars with code 41's...my brothers and my own. My brother got his fixed for (I think) around $300. Mine...um..well, I haven't messed with mine since strangely it hasn't ever effected engine performance

Re: 1991 Trouble Code 41

I also had the same issue on my 1991 Buick LeSabre which turned out to me replacing the magnet. Difficult but I needed to redo the timing set anyways. That cleared the Check Engine Light. Trust me that it really helped but I still notice the bucking! It's not as bad but its still there. I have checked for vacuum leaks. I replaced the fuel filter, put new oil and filter in, and even had my plugs and wires tested. It's still there! Does anyone have any other suggestions?

BTW: I have 229,000 miles and other than that she still runs really well!
