95 escort wagon, won't start

Hi I'm new and could really use some help.
We have a 95 escort wagon 1.9 manual trans.
When you turn the key to start it nothing happens. All the lights, radio, and buzzers work fine but when you turn the key...nothing. It has acted this way a couple of times before but always started. We thought it was because of us not depressing the clutch all the way and some sort of safety thing was kicking in. Now it will not do anything when the key is turned.
My husband is working out of state and has this car. He got stuck last night and had to be towed back to his job. Do any of you have any idea where he should start looking to get this car running again? Maybe the starter or alternator or even a battery problem. If there is a safety thing with the clutch pedal what the heck is it called??
I hope I have explained the problem pretty well...I don't speak CAR very good I know
Thanks for any help you all might have.
Have a great day!

The problem could be the clutch safety switch, the solenoid on the starter or the ignition switch. Bypass the safety switch. Does it turn over? If it does the safety switch at the pedal is bad. Run a hot wire to the solenoid terminal on the starter. Does it turn over? If it does then the igniton switch is faulty.

The car is old enough... could also be a bad ignition switch.

Did it get fixed yet?

Batter terminals. Clean'em up. Hard to keep the problem from reoccuring with a vented lead-acid battery. Sealed batteries may be easier to manage for this vehicle; though less reliable and more expensive than the traditional vented lead-acid types.
