'98 Sunfire GT stumbles on accleration!
Hello all, I recently replaced the sprk plugs, proper gap, tourque etc. on my '98 Sunfire GT. Now it stumbles on acceleration and sometimes when idling it tries to stall out. Could it be that I need to replce the boots going to the Coil Pack Housing? When replacing these plugs, should you put the wire boots on the coil pack or the plug first for a proper fit/connection. Please help!!!!
Cheers, Jason |

Re: '98 Sunfire GT stumbles on accleration!
Usually the only time those boots need to be replaced is when the cam covers and/or oil pressure switch leak oil on them and they deteriorate. Check with an ohmmeter to make sure they aren't open, but I wouldn't expect them to be bad. Did you compare the new plugs to the old ones? Even a very small length difference could make them not snap into the boots. The boots should be snaped to the coil housing and then installed over the plugs, that's why they have the clips that hold them on. Also be sure you got the ignition module connector pluged in all the way and that the terminals are clean. Also check for cracks in the coil housing. Any codes?

Re: '98 Sunfire GT stumbles on accleration!
Thanks for the info. The spark plugs are the same length. On one of the boots the outer shell was a little deteriated but I dont think it would affect the performance. I did clamp the one boot to the plug first as there was not enough room to manuver the plenum? under the, what I think is an oil line on plug closet to the ignition module connector. Maybe it's just a bad connection, I will take it apart and see. Thanks J-Ri
