'99 Grand Am Remote Start - Transmitter Issues

I recently purchased and installed a Carvox CX-601 remote start system in a 1999 Grand Am. From researching the net AFTER my purchase, I realized that this may not be the best system...lesson learned. Nonetheless, I have moved on but do have two issues I'd like opinions on:

1) One of the transmitters will not consistently activate the LED on the transmitter or subsequently send the signal to start the vehicle when I press the two buttons to do so. However, each of the buttons independently work if pressed separately. When I do get the LED to come on, the signal will transmit and the car will start. I have already changed the battery in this transmitter as it was dead after little use. However, that did not solve the RS problem. Lock, unlock, and trunk release work with no problem.

2) The other problem is that intermittenly the car (after successful RS from transmitter), will not kill engine turning the key to off after turning key to on. The brake will not kill engine either. The only thing that will kill engine is the transmitter when I can eventually get it to send the signal.

1) could be a faulty transmitter. Check the contacts in the remote and see if anything is causing it to fail to trigger the buttons.

2)Sounds like the thing's not installed/connected correctly.

Re: '99 Grand Am Remote Start - Transmitter Issues

Thank you for your response. Believe me, I am quite critical of myself and it certainly is a potential that something is connected incorrectly, however, I believe the problem is with the programming or the transmitters or both.

I was hoping I'd find somebody with this same unit that could offer programming advice. Since posting the issue, I have determined that the same issue exists with both transmitters. For some reason, I've already had to replace the battery in one of them because there is some excessive drain occurring. Even though the same issue is with both transmitters, I still believe they are the problem. If the system was connected incorrectly, I wouldn't think that the car would start each and every time that the LED illuminated and signal was sent. However, I could be wrong. It happens quite often.

Ive heard of those systems but never installed or seen any myself.

How long ago did you purchase this remote start ?
Have you tried calling thier tech suport or thier web site?

You might find the answers you are looking for.

also are thier any relays you installed in the system and are they ok ?

until you find solution you can kill your engine by disconnecting one of the connectors at the ignition coil module

Re: '99 Grand Am Remote Start - Transmitter Issues

the kill for the brake is easy.... its grounding output- you should be able to take the wire and ground it to bare metal to shut off the engine-
you need to make sure you get all the correct wires tagged from under the steering column- if these arent correct, you will not get the desired results. did you happen to install the hood pin switch to kill the remote engine when the hood is opened?
you might be able to go to AUDIOVOX website and get the wiring diagram for your specific vehicle so that you can verify that you did get the correct wires. Good Luck!

Re: '99 Grand Am Remote Start - Transmitter Issues

I purchased the system at the end of December but did not install it until last week (had some other issues needed to take care of). I have emailed tech support and got an initial response on Thursday but heard nothing since. I will continue to try that route though. There are two relays in the system but I have not checked those yet. I did not think there was a wiring issue because when I can get the transmitter LED to illuminate, the car RS will activate. The problem with the engine kill I believe is programming related because the brake will kill the engine if I activate the RS, enter the vehicle and just hit the brake. However, if I turn the key to "ON" first, then hit the brake, it will not.

You're probably going to want to actually call tech support. I tried emailing the company for my remote starter at first too and never heard anything back, but when I called them I got right through to a tech. Unless you can get the email address of an actual person, I've never had much luck emailing companies about anything.
