Re: 97 grand am se front brake replacement

Welcome to AF !

Its pretty easy, they're disc.
- Thier's either a bolt, a torx or a allen bolt holding the caliper on.
- should remove a little fluid from the master cylinder before compressing the cal. piston.
-Once you compress the caliper piston enough to remove the caliper it'll pull off. Might need some persuation. Then fully compress the piston with a large C clamp.
-- Pay attention to which pad is where, especialy the wear indicator, inside or out.

-Also Dont let the caliper hang on the brake hose or it could break/leak! An old coat hanger canl secure it up to the spring or something.
- Make sure you regrease the slide pins with brake grease.
- Throw on some new pads and youre ready to reassemble.

If the slide pics seem damaged/rusty/pitted it should be replaced. If the rubber boots on the slide pins are cracked they should be replaced to keep things working properly. They sell a small kit with several pieces, slides, boots, top retainer clips.

And I think the torq on the bolts are around 38 ft. lbs. (51 Nm)

Hope that helps
