Avalon turns over but won't start
My 96 Toyota Avalon will turn over, but won't start. It has been taking a couple of tries to get it to start. If you give it gas while trying to start, it will run while gas is depressed, but smokes out the tailpipe. Once gas is released, car dies.
Any ideas of what I am dealing with here? |

Re: Avalon turns over but won't start
Since you have to depress the accelerator pedal,( Allowing more air into the Intake), and it smokes, White or Black ?, could be fuel pressure regulator or idle air control valve.
Check fuel pressure, will require special kit as there is no schrader valve to attach to, and see if it exceeds specs. Test ISC, Idle Air Control Valve, go to http://www.bedlib.org/ebsco.html , enter 123456789 as password, chose ARRC, this will take you into choosing, year, make, model, and engine size. Then choose repair procedures. In the list to the left go into driveability and emissions, ISC valve testing is in there. Hope this helps |

The smoke that comes out of the tailpipe is white. Also, on the website you left, what user ID should I use? Thanks for your help.

OK here's the address to the site using my "Favorites" address. It will by-pass the sign in. Just click on the Automotive heading and it will take you into the vehicle selection screen. As to the white smoke, does it smell like coolant ? Is there a long interval of white smoke after you get the vehicle started ? Last edited by discnik; 03-15-2009 at 12:34 PM.
