95 GEO Metro Temp Gauge not working.

My 95 GEO Metro Temp Gauge stopped working. I checked all fuses and the fan comes on from time to time to cool the radiator. Will this car need a new instrument cluster or am I missing something?

If I need a new
instrument will one with a tack plug directly into the old spot or is additional wireing needed?

Thanks

Re: 95 GEO Metro Temp Gauge not working.

I've never heard of the gauge itself going bad, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. the sensor that runs the gauge is in the thermostat housing, a bulbous metal bit near the distributor where the upper radiator hose goes into the engine head. there's a sensor with one wire that runs the fan, and another with two wires that runs the gauge. Also might be a bad ground but I think you'd have lost the gas gauge too if that was the case.

An instrument cluster with tach will plug right in. It must be from 92 to 01 with the same number of cylinders your car has.

Re: 95 GEO Metro Temp Gauge not working.

Thanks Woodie I will try the temp sensor I think I can get one at the local auto parts store cheap.

If that works I think I still might want to ad a new or used gauge set is there a good place to look for an instrument cluster with a tach? It's for my 95 GEO Metro 3 cylinder, 1.0 liter, 5 speed.

Thanks!

Re: 95 GEO Metro Temp Gauge not working.

Best place to look for a cluster with a tach, IMHO is your version of a pick and pull. I have checked out hundreds in my local yard, and less than 10 per cent have tachs. I pulled one a few years ago. So glad I did. It makes a difference on the highway if you're watching your gas consumption.

As for the bad reading, I knocked out a coolant sensor years ago, and that caused my guage to have no temperature reading. This other coolant sensor is located below the throttle body on the intake manifold. Check for a disconnected wire.

Thanks Jai,

It's work looking under the hood for a wire that came off. It seems the GEOs have all the wires and there and you just add better parts for the extra options.

Re: 95 GEO Metro Temp Gauge not working.

Jai Your tip worked and thanks for the picture I went under the hood and found the rubber boot that was on the temp sensor and found a bent up brass thing that should clamp on to the plug. I don't know how the gauge ever worked before, or why it stopped working out of the blue, but it works now!

Thank You!
