Design Flaw in Transmission??

I know windstar transmissions have a bad reputation for failing, but what is it about these transmissions that caused so many of them to fail??

I have a 1998 windstar with 209,XXX on it and the trans had to be rebuilt twice, but the engine never had to be touched except for sensors, and external parts.

So what is wrong with these transmissions??

Re: Design Flaw in Transmission??

from what I hear mentioned most, it's heat followed by poor maintenance.

Re: Design Flaw in Transmission??

if I recall, another reason is b/c they put basically a transmission that belongs in cars in a truck/van. not good especially when towing.

When the transmission failed on my 1999 Windstar at 40,000 miles, I was told that the plenetary (sp?) gear had disintegrated.

Mine went at 170k. The planetary gear was gone. My tranny guy found that the pipe that carries the fluid to lube the gear had a large crack in in. It basicly starved the gear of lube!
