2000 Grand Prix GTP P1629

2000 Grand Prix GTP has code P1629, car will run for 3 sec with black master key and then die. Security light in dash is flashing when this happens. Tried the 30 minute relearn for PK3 with no luck. It will start and stay running with the grey Valet key which is perplexing to me. As of right now I am siding with replacing cylinder and ignition switch after everything I've read on the subject. Any insight or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like transmitter in black key has died- need new black key programmed to your car. Since it runs on grey key, the receiver is fine, so shop around for new black pk3 transmitter key - have it cut and then program new key to your car.

Re: 2000 Grand Prix GTP P1629

Here is the catch. I have 2 black keys and it doesn't recognize either of them at this point. What is the chance of both failing at the same time and not the transponder in the lock cylinder, ignition switch?

I agree with brcidd....if the valet key works, then the master key(s) are bad....

Well I guess the cheapest and easiest thing to try at this point is a new key and see if that solves the problem.

Re: 2000 Grand Prix GTP P1629

If I remember right, you can't program a new master key, with a valet key....

So you will need to do the 30 minute procedure(10 minutes, 3X's)....I would have a jumper box on the battery.....apply e-brake to make sure headlights don't automatically come on....

New GM PK3 key is on the way, I will post results. I sure hope it's that easy and I don't have to switch out the cylinder and ignition switch.

Re: 2000 Grand Prix GTP P1629

Will do.

I think one that I read stated on step 2 try to start the car and this is the procedure I used to try and relearn the keys I have is this incorrect and make a difference?

Re: 2000 Grand Prix GTP P1629

If you read is has "master" in quotations because there is no original programmed master. It is the relearn for when you don't have an original master.

Re: 2000 Grand Prix GTP P1629

It's the wrong procedure, because by trying to start the car, it's like you quit the procedure, so if you then tried it a third time, that was actually your first attempt.....

Re: 2000 Grand Prix GTP P1629

And the Drama continues. Finally got the OEM GM key I ordered off of Ebay, went and had it cut and it won't unlock anything. Looks like the shank on the new key is shorter by the black end. Of course the Ebay seller is stating it was cut wrong. LOL Really, it's an automated process and you can clearly see the 2 keys are different when comparing the 2.

Re: 2000 Grand Prix GTP P1629

Here is the update, finally received the new GM PK3 keys and this time the cut worked correctly. Did the relearn and it worked. So just out of curiosity, I tried to relearn the old keys using the duplicate key procedure 15 seconds, and they programmed back in also. Either way, I'll take it. Thank you all for your help.
