Question 1996 How to replace Speed Sensor

I just bought a Speed Sensor online for $25. The dealer wanted $171 for it!

I know it goes in or on the transmission? Does anyone have details on how to replace the sensor?

Thanks!

John

Re: 1996 How to replace Speed Sensor

Hopefully you have a VSS for an auto trans. There is $100 differance between a VSS for a manual trans and one for an automatic. From underneath the car near the starter and half-shaft unplug the sensor and remove the bolt with 10mm socket or wrench. Pull the sensor out of the transmission. Use vasoline or ATF on the new O-ring and put the new sensor in the same way. Connect the the wire.

Re: 1996 How to replace Speed Sensor

Good Deal! I am certain that six mos ago the best prices I found were $40 and $140. All three sensors are easy to change from underneath. I think there are only two wire connector plugs near the starter. One goes to the starter solenoid, follow the other to the VSS. Push the VSS into the trans by hand. Useing the bolt to push it in can break the ear off of the sensor. O2 sensor instructions are, don't use sealer on the threads that doesn't say O2 safe. There may be some approved type of sealer on the threads already.
