Exclamation Brake Question

I have noticed that over the past 8 months that my brake fluid is going down slightly, I tend to lose about 1/2 " of fluid over the span of about 8 months, can anyone tell me if this is normal and can just a sign of the brake pads wearing down or if would be a leak somewhere, and if it is a leak where would the trouble spots be, I dont see any kind of leaks around the master cylinder or around the calipers. Its a 97 towncar with 69,000 miles on it, thanks

Re: Brake Question

Might be just the fluid going down, but I would take it to a shop and have them check it out more thoroughly.... Usually doesn't cost a whole lot either...

Re: Brake Question

Thanks for the advice, I took it in and the brake lines that are right under the drivers seat that feed the back brakes were rotted, $250.00 to fix.

Re: Brake Question

If the fluid goes down that much it is probably a leak somewhere. You should be able to either see it or smell it if it is leaking that much. I know it will go down a little as the pads wear but I don't believe 1/2 unless there is a leak.

Re: Brake Question

It is common on these cars for the brake line to rub on the car frame under the driver's seat. I pulled the line down as much as I could, did a good job with wet or dry emery cloth and then put J B Weld over the hole; a good inch either side. After letting it dry good, I put on another layer, and then a third. That was three years ago and it is still working very well. Good luck. (you may have to have someone sit in the car and hold the brake pedal down while you look to see where it is leaking.)
