Catalytic Converter Warranty question..

2000 lesabre...converter warranty is good for 8 years..or mileage..niot an issue..

i hear ruffling from the catalytic converter...on startup and revving..no problem's driving..i.e. acceleration or check engine light...

I make appointment with GM who tell me that unless there is acceleration problem or check engine light is on....warranty replacement is not covered yet....and i will be charged..even though the converter is definitely on it's way out...

i find this odd...any opinionns or experience with this warranty coverage...

p.s. i also took to muffler specialist who said converter needs to be replaced...

p.s.s. my guess is that GM wants to avoid covering this warranty so they tell dealers that converter must be totally worn before they will reimburse dealers...now in my case i still have over 2 years of coverage...so it's just a matter of time...

I would definitely talk to another dealership about this issue. If that doesn't work, then contact the zone manager for your region (the dealers will have this information). It seems to me that if you are being told by different outside sources that the converter has gone bad, then bring that up as well.

thanx...i guess the service people are trained to say these things..yet maybe if a gm mechanic saw it (like the muffler specialist) they would have said it was 'shot'..

Re: Re: Catalytic Converter Warranty question..

Based on my experiences in doing warranty work (it was for computers but I imagine it's the same), the service facility usually doesn't make as much profit as they would if you paid out of pocket. Here's why:
1. The manufacturer only reimburses the dealer's cost for the parts(sometimes provides the part to the dealer) -- therefore they cannot make a profit on the part.
2. The manufacturer usually does not reimburse labor costs at the same rate as what you would pay (IE my company charged $80/hr. HP only reimbursed us at $40/hr). There's less (sometimes NO) profit being made on labor too.

In rare cases the service center actually LOSES money on warranty work. I think that this is a huge motivator for dealers to reject warranty claims. It stinks for the consumer, and winds up hurting everyone involved... the consumer(because you still have a broken car), the dealer(the consumer is less likely to deal with them if they have a bad experience), and the manufacturer(the consumer views their products as junk, and thinks the warranty isn't worth anything)!

Just my $0.02.

Re: Catalytic Converter Warranty question..

What is ruffling? It sounds like the cat converter is probably okay. Is it by chance a heat shield rattling? I have seen that before.

that's what i thought...but it doesn't rattle..muffler guys looked at and it was secure...it only 'ruffles' (maybe my terminology is bad..) when you
start the car and 'rev'....higher 'rpm's i guess do the trick....when driving too many sounds interfere to hear it again...

thanx

Re: Catalytic Converter Warranty question..update

is there a connection to transmission and catalytic converter..i'm saying this because my transmission went in december....and i'm still with the same catalytic converter...

i guess my question is...can a defective or underperforming catalytic converter contribute to 'ruining' your transmission?

thanx
